Newburgh, NY – In recognition of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in September, and the upcoming Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS) and Resorts World Hudson Valley (RWHV) to provide free breast and prostate screenings to the community on Thursday, September 5, at Resorts World Hudson Valley.

“Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall is committed to improving the health of the communities we serve and that begins with prevention and screenings,” said Daniel Maughan, MSLC President and CEO. “We are proud to partner with Resorts World Hudson Valley and the American Cancer Society to provide a free screening opportunity and look forward to continuing to strengthen access to preventative care in our community. Our latest Community Health Needs Assessment, which was conducted in partnership with the Orange County Department of Health, shows alarming incidence rates of cancer in the populations MSLC serves and its imperative that we work collaboratively to provide ease of access to healthcare.”

The breast cancer screenings were performed by Family Medicine physician, Dr. Nicole Agcanas, of the Medical Group at Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall and the prostate cancer screenings by Urologist, Dr. Jaspreet Singh.

“Resorts World Hudson Valley made a commitment when we opened nearly two years ago to be a strong community partner,” said Meghan Taylor, Senior Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Relations. “Our team has made sure we’re out in the community, but we also want to use our state-of-the-art space to create a meeting ground here in Orange County. Hosting these free cancer screenings, in partnership with Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall and the American Cancer Society, will ensure our neighbors are healthy and have access to quality cancer screenings.”

Prostate Cancer: Prostate cancer affects many men, but there are tests to find it early. Nearly 2/3 of men 55-69 are not being screened for prostate cancer. At age 50, the American Cancer Society recommends men at average risk should talk to their health care provider to make an informed decision about prostate cancer screening. Men at high risk of developing prostate cancer, including African American individuals who have a first degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer younger than age 65, should talk to a doctor at age 45.

In 2024, it is estimated that 20,630 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in New York and 1,630 men will die from the disease. (Source: American Cancer Society 2024 Cancer Facts and Figures)

Breast Cancer: American Cancer Society breast cancer guidelines recommend women at average risk have an opportunity to start screening at age 40, but by age 45 to begin annual screening. Regular screening can catch cancer early, when it may be easier to treat. Talk to your healthcare provider about breast cancer screening. Factors such as family history, genetics and lifestyle choices can influence when screening should start and how often someone should get screened. Breast cancer occurs mainly in women, but men can get it, too.

In 2024, it is estimated that 19,160 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in New York and 2,080 women will die from the disease. (Source: American Cancer Society 2024 Cancer Facts and Figures.)

Mr. Maughan added, “I thank Meghan Taylor and the team at RWHV, along with Kristi Greco from the ACS, for their collaboration and helping MSLC to bring our screening efforts to our community members.”
