Montefiore St. Luke's Cornwall First in the Region to Perform Shockwave Treatment in Cardiovascular Procedures

Newburgh, NY - Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall (MSLC) successfully performed its first Shockwave Intravascular Lithotripsy system procedure, making it the first local hospital in the region to accomplish this. The Shockwave intravascular Lithotripsy system is used to safely break up calcium build-up while significantly reducing the risk of complications to ensure procedures are more efficient and predictable.

How Does it Work?
The Shockwave intravascular Lithotripsy system is a procedure that uses a tube-like device called a balloon catheter that contains lithotripsy emitters. These lithotripsy emitters can ultimately break up hard materials like calcification that restricts blood flow to the heart. Finishing up the procedure, a stent is implanted to open the arteries that supply blood to the heart that were narrowed or blocked due to the calcification.
