St. Luke's Cornwall Health System Foundation Awards 2019 Scholarships
Newburgh, NY -- The St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation (SLCHSF) awarded three annual scholarships to local, graduating high school seniors entering an accredited university or community college in the fall of 2019. These scholarships were provided in recognition of not only scholastic excellence but also the volunteerism displayed by each recipient. The 2019 scholarship recipients included students from Newburgh Free Academy and Goshen High School.
Michael L. Pappis, MD Memorial Scholarship
This year’s scholarship has been awarded to Spencer Doyle, an aspiring healthcare provider and graduating senior from Goshen High School. Spencer has volunteered countless hours at Orange Regional Medical Center, Goshen Public Library, and many local camps and food banks. This is in addition to a rigorous academic schedule and being diagnosed with a sudden visual impairment known as Stickler’s Syndrome. Despite the hardships and recovery, Spencer has accepted these circumstances, growing his incredible work ethic. He will be attending Binghamton University this fall.
St. Luke’s Cornwall Auxiliary Scholarships
This year the SLC Auxiliary Scholarships have been awarded to Ariana Woodruff and Nina Zylberberg, both graduating seniors from Newburgh Free Academy.
“It is an honor to award the St. Luke’s Cornwall Auxiliary Scholarships to these incredibly deserving young women,” said SLC Auxiliary Chairwoman, Margaret “Chip” Pelella. “Their dedication to our community and the volunteer efforts displayed by each recipient truly mirrors the mission and vision of the SLC Auxiliary.”
Ariana has a strong passion for learning and community involvement, aiming to inspire those around her. She is an active member of the NFA Key Club and volunteers at the Hudson Valley SPCA. This fall, Ariana will be attending SUNY Binghamton as a Pre-Med student, pursuing a career as a cardiothoracic surgeon.
Nina also exemplifies leadership characteristics in her education and her community. She is an active member of the National Honor Society and has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Newburgh and the Newburgh Performing Arts Academy (NPAA) for 13 years. Nina plans to attend SUNY Orange in the fall as a Pre-Med student and plans to transfer to SUNY Stony Brook after completion of her degree.
