SLCH Celebrates Move More Month

Hospital

Newburgh, NY – St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) affirmed its commitment to heart health by kicking off the American Heart Association’s Move More Month with walking events at both the Newburgh and Cornwall campuses.

Participants from a wide variety of departments took time for some added activity, including a march from the main lobby to the upper level of the parking structure in Newburgh. Walking is one of the simplest ways to become more active. According the AHA, research shows at least 30 minutes of walking per day can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and stroke, improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity, improve mental well-being, and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, breast and colon cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

The event also served as a fundraiser for the SLCH Heart Walk Team. For a small donation, walkers received a number of items to aid in their efforts to be more active. Joe Surace, the hospital’s Vice President of Operations, is the chair of this year’s American Heart Association Tri-County Heart Walk. The annual event, which will take place on May 6 at Harriman State Park, is a key fundraiser for the AHA in its pursuit to finance programs and research.

The American Heart Association designates every April as Move More Month, celebrating physical activity and encouraging all Americans to commit to being more active on a regular basis.
