SLCH Slated for Numerous Community Outreach Events in April

Newburgh, NY – St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) staff and clinicians are once again preparing for a busy month of important health and wellness education and outreach to friends and neighbors throughout the Hudson Valley. The April calendar features a host of events covering a variety of topics and services.

Activities begin on Wednesday. April 5 at the annual SUNY Orange Health Fair in Middletown. Representatives from the Littman Cancer Center will be on hand from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. to provide information and answer questions about cancer prevention, treatment and community resources. 

The education moves into cyberspace later that evening when the SLCH Facebook page (www.fb.com/stlukescornwallhospital) will host a live video stream featuring Pharmacy Manager John Battiato’s medication management presentation to the St. Luke’s Survivors cancer support group. Viewers can interact live by commenting on the video, or submit their questions in advance to bgunning@slchospital.org.

The first of two presentations at the Center of Highland Falls will take place Tuesday, April 11 at 11:30 a.m. Robyn Kelley, Patient Navigator, will provide advice to caregivers about not only taking care of their loved one, but also themselves. 

The Littman Cancer Center again takes center stage on Wednesday, April 12 when it hosts free oral cancer screenings from 1-3 p.m., at the SLCH Cornwall campus. We encourage everyone to get screened, but particularly if you have used tobacco, drink alcohol or have tested positive for HPV. Dr. Craig Berzofsky, a laryngologist treating complex disorders of the voice, airway and swallowing, will conduct the free mouth and throat cancer screenings. On Tuesday, April 18, SLCH urologist Dr. Jaspreet Singh will give free men's health seminar to discuss the latest treatment options for ED or bladder leakage at the Doubletree by Hilton in Nanuet at 6:15 p.m. To reserve your spot, call 1-877-433-2873. SLCH continues its series of lectures at the Cornwall Public Library on Wednesday, April 19 when Dr. Rehan Ahmad will discuss the causes, symptoms and treatment of diabetes. The free presentation begins at 3 p.m. No registration is necessary.

That same day, Dr. Brian Reade will visit All Sport Health & Fitness in Fishkill for an evening presentation on common foot and ankle issues. Dr. Reade’s seminar begins at 6:30 p.m. To reserve your seat, please call (845) 784-3849 or email bgunning@slchospital.org.

There are also a pair of events the following day. The second of SLCH’s visits to The Center of Highland Falls is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. John Battiato will present on the misuse and abuse of medication among the senior population. That is followed by a diabetes seminar by SLCH’s Certified Diabetes Educator Dorothea Lever, RN, PhD to the staff and faculty at the OU-BOCES in Goshen. 

On Saturday, April 22, the hospital will be involved in three community activities. SLCH will have a team participating in the annual Newburgh Community Cleanup, helping beautify the neighborhood around the facility. The Cardiovascular Institute and rehabilitation services staff will represent the hospital at the Orange County Senior Expo from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at The Promenade in Middletown.

In addition, Dr. Jaspreet Singh, an SLCH urologist, will give a presentation about managing the side effects of prostate cancer treatment at the Homewood Suites located at Stewart Airport in New Windsor. That last week is among the busiest of the month. The Littman Cancer Center staff will start the activities at the annual Wallkill High School Health Fair on Wednesday, April 26. 

Dr. Wayne Weiss, the Medical Director of the SLCH Institute for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, will give a free weight loss surgery seminar on Thursday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hyatt House in Fishkill. The presentation will cover different surgical techniques, the risks and benefits, as well as how the bariatric surgery team can help you make important lifestyle changes. Friday, April 28 is another double-event day. The Town of Newburgh Seniors will welcome Gwen Borsenberger, SLCH Director of Ambulatory Operations, for a lunch and learn featuring information about preventing falls and balance issues. Dr. Mehul Patel, Medical Director of the SLCH Cardiovascular Institute, will also visit with a senior group that day, the Cornwall Golden Age Club, about heart health.

With the spring weather hopefully in full swing, the first two outdoor events of the year are scheduled for April’s final weekend. On Saturday, April 29, SLCH will attend the second Urban Farming Fair from 12-4 p.m. This year’s event will be held at 80 Broadway in downtown Newburgh. The hospital will also support another important community initiative on Sunday. The inaugural Downing Park Walking Club Kick-off Event is scheduled from 12-3 p.m. at the Downing Park Shelter House located just off 9W at Carpenter Avenue and 3rd Street. The eight-week walking program is slated to begin on May 1.
