Foundation Awards 2017 Scholarships

Newburgh, NY ― St. Luke’s Cornwall Health System Foundation awarded four scholarships to graduating high school seniors entering an accredited university or community college in the fall of 2017. The ceremony took place on May 18th at the Hospital’s Newburgh campus. The annual scholarships were provided in recognition of scholastic excellence and volunteerism. The 2017 scholarship recipients included students from Cornwall, Newburgh, Chester and Arlington, New York. Congratulations to them on all of their hard work and dedication.
Michael L. Pappis, MD Memorial Scholarship
This year the scholarship is awarded to Sahana Shiggaon. Sahana will be graduating from Newburgh Free Academy. This fall Sahana has chosen to attend the University of Missouri- Kansas City. Sahana has not only shadowed in the SLCH NICU, but she also started an annual health camp in India to provide free basic healthcare, include neonatal care, to villages that lack medical resources.
Albert M. Berkelhamer Memorial Scholarship
The Albert M. Berkelhamer Scholarship recipient this year is Kristen George. Kristen is active within her community. She has dedicated many hours as a SLCH hospital volunteer, as a youth advisor with her church, and with the National Honor Society. Kristen will be graduating from Cornwall High School and is planning to attend SUNY Binghamton in the fall.
St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital Auxiliary Scholarship
This year the Auxiliary Scholarship will be awarded to Bridget Burke, a graduating senior from Chester High School, and Kaitlyn Mundackal, a graduating senior from Arlington High School. This fall, Bridget will be attending SUNY New Paltz to study Speech and Language Pathology. Bridget has been a volunteer with the Chester Kiwanis Chapter, the local food pantry, and also plays trumpet in band and at various events. Kaitlyn will be attending SUNY Geneseo as a student in their Dental program, which is affiliated with the University of Buffalo Dental School. She has volunteered as a religious education teacher, and also mentors incoming freshmen at Arlington High School.
