SLCH September Community Education Calendar Set

St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) welcomes fall with another busy month of community education and outreach opportunities. The September docket includes a variety of topics and locations throughout the Hudson Valley 

The SLCH Diabetes Management program is schedule for the first events of the month. Our certified diabetes educators will be available at the Cornwall campus for office hours from 1-5 p.m., on Tuesday, September 5 and September 19. Office hours at the Newburgh campus are set for 3-6 p.m., on Thursday, September 7, September 22 and September 29. Office hour visits are by appointment only. There is a diabetes support group meeting at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, September 8 at the Cornwall campus. In addition, there are three opportunities to enroll in the SLCH Diabetes Lifestyle Lessons Self-Management program. An eight-hour, one-day option is available on Saturday, September 9 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. Part I of the program will be held Saturday, September 23 from 1-5 p.m. with Part II following on Saturday, September 30 from 1-5 p.m. To enroll in the program, please call (845) 458-4000. Dr. Margarita Kogan of the St. Luke’s Cornwall Medical Group will present the first seminar of the month on Thursday, September 14. Dr. Kogan will speak at Glen Arden Continuing Care Retirement Community in Goshen about the causes and effects of prescription opioid abuse in the senior population, including who is at risk, which medications are addictive, the signs and symptom, and opioid abuses’ effect on Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia. A free buffet dinner beginning at 6 p.m. is included. Reservations are required and can be made by calling (845) 360-1469.

Dr. Esteban Cuartas hits the lecture circuit on Thursday, September 21 with a free presentation on the symptoms, treatment and prevention of many common back and spine issues. The location shifts to the Cornwall Public Library on Friday, September 22. Dr. Henry Greenblatt, a board certified dermatologist, will give a free seminar on the importance of performing skin self-exams and what to do if you find a concern. The presentation begins at 1 p.m.  No advance registration is necessary.

SLCH is a sponsor of the 8th Annual Premier Cares Foundation Prostate Cancer Walk on Saturday, September 23. This year’s walk will begin on the Poughkeepsie side of the Walkway Over the Hudson. For more information, go to http://bit.ly/2017ProstateCancerWalk.

The busy week continues at the Cornwall Fall Festival on Sunday, September 24. Located on Main Street in Cornwall, the annual event runs from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., featuring food, live entertainment, vendors, and much more. 

The seminar schedule resumes back at the Cornwall Library on Tuesday, September 26 at 2 p.m. Dr. Cameron Budenz of the SLCH Balance Center and Dr. Anita Bhola of the SLCH Center for Sleep Medicine will present a free seminar on balance and fall prevention, along with the diagnosis and treatment of sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. No registration is necessary.

September’s activities wrap up on Thursday, September 28 at the annual Newburgh Wellness Fair at Kaplan Hall located on the SUNY Orange campus. The public event begins at 10 a.m., and concludes at 2 p.m.
