Joan Cusack-McGuirk Named President and CEO

Hospital
Newburgh, NY (Sept. 19, 2016) -- St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital (SLCH) is excited to announce that Joan Cusack-McGuirk has been appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the organization. Cusack-McGuirk was named Interim President and CEO in June 2015. Cusack-McGuirk, a longtime resident of the Cornwall community, has more than 35 years of experience in the healthcare industry, serving more than 20 years at St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital. She was instrumental in finalizing the partnership between SLCH and the Montefiore Health System (Montefiore) announced earlier this year. Since that time, Cusack-McGuirk has worked to integrate SLCH into Montefiore, a national leader in transforming health care to improve access, quality and experience of care and a leading academic health system.

“The Board of Trustees is proud to formalize Joan’s role as President and CEO,” said Michelle Rider, Esq., Chair of the SLCH Board of Trustees. “Joan is a tireless advocate for SLCH and the patients we serve, and her commitment to SLCH is unwavering. She truly understands the direction of healthcare transformation, and there is no better person to lead St. Luke's Cornwall Hospital into the future of healthcare delivery.”

“Joan exemplifies what makes Montefiore different from all other health systems,” said Steven M. Safyer, M.D., President and CEO, Montefiore Health System. “She has deep roots in the community, having lived here for 35 years, and understands firsthand what the community needs. Joan is a visionary administrator and experienced nurse leader who knows she can succeed when caring for people comes first. We are fortunate to have her at the helm of SLCH.”

Prior to becoming Interim President and CEO, Cusack-McGuirk served as Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at SLCH. She has implemented several key programs positioning the hospital for the future. Under her clinical leadership, SLCH developed the Care Transitions Program, a multidisciplinary model of care to provide cost effective quality care across the continuum and ensure patients receive the right care both in and out of the hospital. SLCH also established the hospital’s first Nurse Residency Program during her tenure.

“I am honored by the Board’s decision and their faith in my leadership within this organization,” said Cusack-McGuirk. “I am excited to continue to work with our colleagues at the local and regional level, to enhance care provided to our community.”

Under Cusack-McGuirk’s leadership, SLCH has earned numerous awards and accreditations, including being designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement by BlueCross BlueShield; SLCH was recognized as a five star recipient for treatment of Sepsis by Healthgrades; as well as being named a Most Wired Hospital, a tribute to SLCH’s Information Technology infrastructure.

Cusack-McGuirk graduated with an RN from St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York City, received her BSN from SUNY New Paltz, earned a master's degree in Administration at NYU, and is a graduate of the Johnson & Johnson Wharton Fellows Program.

Joan resides in New Windsor with husband, John McGuirk.
